La Pedrera - one of many beautiful beaches in Uruguay...

...but what are those black things?
They smell like millions of rotting insects.
They look like millions of dead black beetles.
Ah, it is millions of rotting dead black beetle corpses.
Bob in his favourite spot under the stairs.

Mate ('ma.te/) is a highly caffeinated infusion prepared by steeping dried leaves (Ilex paraguariensis) in hot water. It is the national drink in Uruguay. It needs further explaining but not by us, as we still didn't work it out. We've been slyly trying to get pictures of people actually carrying it (thermos of hot water tucked under the right arm, mate mug held close in right hand - which leaves your left hand free for everything else) but it's a little hard with only the big camera in operation.
We've been in Buenos Aires now for a week, moving into our new flat in the morning and starting Spanish school on Monday...but we'll save the rest for the next update.
