Punto Peru
Just a few points that made our month in Peru more memorable:
Cute kids (see below)
- The Floating Reed Islands of the Uros. These man-made islands need to have the reeds replaced constantly to stop people falling into Lake Titicaca.
- Incas and Ruins. What wasn't annihilated by the Spanish is still standing strong. Don't think you'd be able to get a contractor to make bricks like that nowadays.
- Bars that show bootleg movies and serve you drinks. Brilliant - but unfortunately would never work in London for obvious reasons.
- Peruvian Hairless Dogs. These dogs have a body temperature of 40C hence the no hair thing and are great for people with arthritis. The girls have funny little mohawks. Cute in a very ugly kind of way.
- Ceviche. Raw fish soaked in lemon juice and coriander. Yum.
- Machu Picchu - a seventh wonder of the world and rightly so.
- Pre-Colombian ruins. These guys came before the Incas and even their cities are still half standing. Impressive really as they're all made out of mud. Mud bricks, mortar and plaster.
- Lima - thank god there was a Starbucks. We know it's a big bad corporation, but damn they make good coffee.
- Surfing and beaches. Some of the best surf in all of South America.
- CUY. A Peruvian specialty. Yes it's guinea pig, yes we tried it and no, it doesn't taste like chicken. At least the chefs are nice enough to send them out wearing little tomato hats. (Jesus is even nibbling on some in 'The Last Supper' painting in the cathedral)
- Cloud Forest - when you're in it, you can understand why Machu Picchu was undiscovered for so many years.
- Parades - seems the Peruvians are also very dedicated to their parades and marching. At least one a day would happen in Cusco's main Plaza de Armas.
- Cute kids either in the parades or dressed in traditional clothes getting money from touristas watching the parades.
- Cusqueña - Peruvian beer of choice.
- Massage ladies on every Cusco corner - for all your trekking aches and pains.
- Earthquakes - lucky we missed the big one, but at least we would've known where to stand had we been there. "Zona Segura En Casos De Sismos" signs are in every bar, restaurant and hostel.
